I traveled to Morocco through the Morocco Exchange program last year. It was only for four days, but such a memorable experience. The families and students I met were some of the most generous and hospitable people I have ever met, even though they live in a developing country with less resources than most Europeans and Americans. For example, most people in Rabat (the capital city) do not have running water. My host family showed me some of their most treasured possessions, such as their wedding video, pictures of their young daughter at every age, and pages from the Koran a grandfather had copied onto stone slabs when he was younger. I liked the layout of the streets, which are too narrow and winding for cars to pass through, so kids run and play outside at all hours. Here is a mural from the coastal town of Asilah. There are many artworks in the small town, I liked the soothing colors and flowing movements in this one. Also, I think some of the waves contain Arabic script. Can anyone translate them for me? This stencil is from a side street in Granada, Spain. I love the juxtaposition of classic 1950’s-style imagery with the DANGER sign, for an unexpected twist. Reading has changed my life and opened me up to so many new ideas I couldn’t have found otherwise. One example is Our Bodies, Ourselves by the Boston Women’s Health Collective, which helped me accept my body as an adolescent girl for all the things it could do, and not just how I look. Right now I am reading the Palestine comic book by Joe Sacco, and find it similarly inspiring. What books have inspired you?

This final page is about embracing the moment, because it is all we have. It’s also about how time moves in cycles or spirals, it’s not linear as many in American society would have us believe… Yesterday I heard a famous writer & scholar named Tim Tyson say that history is like a flowing river. This moment is a part of history, just as the past influences the present. On a political level, he also said that the point of history is to CHANGE it, and make things better.
I originally read this prose poem at a Muslim-Jewish arts festival in Spring 2005.

Located near the Jardines del Triunfo (a big park where lots of University students hang out) in Granada, Spain. This graffiti reads: “I am not the woman of your life, I am life.” Holla!

Near downtown Granada, Spain. This graffiti says: “Save money! Bypass the middle man! Fill the tank of your car directly with human blood.” Obviously, very few people in the world want a war with Iraq. During my travels to Europe and North Africa I met many people who had a negative viewpoint of the US government, particularly our wars in the Middle East. For this reason, I think Bush’s war on terror is dangerous for our country.

brushing teeth graffiti 03/01/2007

This wall art is from Granada, Spain. It was located on a winding street near the Genil River, where I used to live. This kid’s face is so cute, and I like the bright colors contrasting with the black-and-white image. But the real reason this photo is my banner: I love brushing my teeth! Like most people, I don’t have dental insurance, and sometimes worry about developing a bad dental problem later on that will be expensive or painful to fix. To prevent that, I brush and floss regularly and have built up a ritual that is almost enjoyable. I like Glide brand dental floss the best and always try to brush for more than two minutes.

“Revive One” is a graffiti piece from a back street in Barcelona, in the old Jewish quarter. I like that the artist(s) mixed big spray-painted graphics with more detailed stencils. Look closely, you will see the boy is performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on his stuffed bunny rabbit — hence the title. Gotta love that Spanish sense of humor!
