Hello!
I found this blog while reading another article of yours on the Expatica website.
I am not American but Argentinian - still, I've also felt disconcerted when visiting the "lady's doctors" here in the Netherlands! They don't normally provide you with the disposable gown so basically, once you're out of your clothes you have to valiantly walk across the office and climb onto the table for "inspection"...
After the first time though, I just took the precaution of wearing a skirt to my appointments so that I can get rid of my underwear and and at least keep the skirt on and then roll it up once on the table...
Funny, eh? Though not "funny hahaha" though....

Hi there,
I love your Zora Neale Hurston collage. I am writing a smallish research paper on some theories I have on events that may have shaped Zora's identity and life. What a brilliant and progressive African-American woman, all before the advent of civil rights and feminism! I think she was so far ahead of her time, people felt they had to bring her down. :-( I am at university in the Bay Area. Have you seen her census records? I found them fascinating, brought some insights. Beautiful site, really enjoyed it! Thank you. :-)

Hi David,
I've only ridden in Amsterdam so far, where the slower mopeds are allowed on bike paths. Haven't ridden between towns yet, but that's good to know.

Actually, they are only allowed on some of the bike paths. Very rarely are they allowed on paths within towns. You'll see a sign which directs them off onto the road.

However, in some places more than others, this doesn't stop them continuing on the bike paths.

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments and adding to the conversation. I don't understand what the ethical problem is with eating horse as compared to cow, pig, chicken, etc. Why is it wrong to slaughter horses but ok to kill cows, especially in the factory farming conditions most cattle experience?

If you want to read an interesting/disturbing/beautiful art book about factory farming, check out <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Meat-Sue-Coe/dp/156858041X" rel="nofollow">"Dead Meat"</a> by British artist Sue Coe.

Thanks Marc. The cycling rules on your blog are helpful.

One thing I forgot to mention in this post is that motor scooters can ride on the bike paths. I absolutely hate that! It can be so startling to be cycling along and have a loud speeding scooter zoom past you. Why did the Dutch transportation authority allow that?

Something I forgot to mention, related to the casual atmosphere of the doctor's office, is that very little paperwork is involved. You don't need to fill out long histories or (much) insurance information.

They really trust you here and are not litigious, as in the States.

For example, one time I had some lab tests done and the doctor gave me the full vials, a plastic envelope, and told me where the nearest mail box was to send them to the lab. Can you imagine that happening in the US?

In Europe horses are definitely NOT just another animal to consume, such as cows or pigs. Many, many people don't want to eat horsemeat, that's why the meat is in disguise. People don't really know (for sure) they are in the bitterballs.

But it's not a real taboo to eat horsemeat, like in England. The people who don't want to eat it don't object that other people do. Maybe because historically we only ate the old or lame horses, because it's a shame to waste the meat. I only learned recently that the horsemeat nowadays comes from wild horses in America! I don't think many people know this in the Netherlands.
